Letterboxd! I use it to log and rate the movies I watch even though I kind of hate assigning ratings to something so subjective. It’s a five-star scale. What if a movie is unequivocally a masterpiece but it’s just not for me. Or I was in a bad mood when I watched it. How do I rate that fairly? I get hung up on the right and wrong and all my dumb opinions.
Some of my favorite movies and our greatest works of art are stuck at a 4.5. I can’t give The Deer Hunter five stars, it’s too gut-wrenching. The Talented Mr. Ripley lags for like ten minutes so I dock it half a star. Of the 1,346 movies I’ve logged on Letterboxd so far, I’ve given only 30 of them a five-star rating. That’s like 2% — I’m stingy.
What makes something a five-star movie for me? I’m insanely impacted by nostalgia so if I loved it during childhood or adolescence and still do, five stars. A movie doesn’t have to be a flawless masterpiece, but I have to be rocked by it. Sometimes it’s instinctual.
Rewatchability is a big factor, though there’s a movie on this list I would not consider a rewatchable. I need to feel in awe of some aspect of it. The acting, the script, the directing, the way it makes me feel. Emotional connection and overall enjoyment, I guess.
Looking at my list, clearly I’m a woman. I like coming-of-age, romance, stories about identity, a tragic element. Feel free to make recommendations, argue with me, or share your five-star films. Here are mine.
The Parent Trap (1998)

There’s no reason the structure of this movie should work. You think it’s about to end, but then they hit you with another full act.
Who had a better film debut than Lindsay? She’s technically playing four roles.
Tough day for women when we wake up at 27 and realize we’re older than Meredith Blake

Cate wearing perfectly tailored clothes!
Cate living in a brutalist apartment in Berlin!
You feel the slow burn of dread the entire film, yet the ending delights me every time
Legally Blonde (2001)
Streaming on: Omg nowhere right now
I never liked Pam from The Office’s attitude toward Meredith and Amy Adams’ Katy for including Legally Blonde in their desert island movies. This is a perfect movie!

The greatest sequel and trilogy
The most naturalistic acting I’ve ever seen

A most delightful moment in life was when I finished watching Before Sunrise in my dorm at 2 am, discovered the existence of Before Sunset, and dove right in

It’s part of the Criterion Collection, has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and was one of Obama’s favorites that year. Free Solo is cool but this should’ve won the Oscar!
Best of all, it’s 90 minutes
I’m now lucky enough to be friends with the director, Bing, but I didn’t know him the first, second, or third time I watched it. Now that I do, it’s not surprising he made something so incredible.
