Outfits I still think about
The most memorable looks from movies, music videos, and more, according to me.
Can you tell I didn’t feel like writing a whole thing this week. This is basically a Buzzfeed listicle. I’m a millennial after all!
Gwyneth’s Great Expectations green set
We’re off to a basic-bitch start, but this one lives on for a reason. The color couldn’t be better. Her entire wardrobe in Great Expectations embodies the ‘90s minimalism look that’s back.
Say what you want about Gwyneth but I think she’s in on the joke about her (sort of). There's a musical coming out about her ski trial that I would love to see. “Well I lost half a day of skiing…”
J.Lo’s pink coat in the All I Have video
Winter’s been miserable but if I had this coat, I’d be thriving. Knowing J.Lo (which I do), that’s real fur 🙁. She used to wear mink eyelashes!
Omar Little’s robe
Have you ever seen anything more luxurious than the teal silk robe Omar wears in season 4 of The Wire to go buy cereal? You should see what I look like when I run down the street to Key Food.
Omar comin! And he looks good.
My Date With the President’s Daughter pink dress
If you watched this movie film growing up, the pink dress stuck with you. Recently, the Wizard of Oz ruby slippers sold for $28M at auction. I think this dress would go for at least $28K if you found the right millennial. I also wanted that holographic eye ring Duncan gave her and to party at Club Alien!
Head to YouTube immediately to rewatch this and get the song stuck in your head.
All of Britney’s Lucky looks
Her Toxic bodysuit is the most obvious choice (yet another sexual awakening) but her Lucky ensembles are up there for me. The fur-trim robe! The silver dress that’s Old Hollywood meets Saks Potts.
Obviously the Atonement dress
It has its own Wikipedia page. That’s herstory.
Rihanna’s heart-shaped coat
What’s it like to be this cool?
Molly McIntire as Miss Victory
I was lucky enough to have two American Girl dolls: Josefina and Kit. But Molly’s were my favorite books because like most children, I was obsessed with the Titanic and WWII. Molly had glasses, I had glasses. When you’re a four-eyes, you dream of that magical moment you take them off and everyone suddenly thinks you’re gorgeous. This was (almost) Molly’s moment.
Spoiler: At the end of this book, she gets sick and can’t be Miss Victory (coveted role in her dance recital) but her dad finally returns from the war and I guess that’s just as good. 🤷♀️
Michelle Pfeiffer’s Pink Ladies jacket
There are two sequels better than the original: The Godfather Part II and Grease 2. Not up for discussion.
Judy Funnie’s beret
Adding “successfully pull off a beret” to my list of aspirations.
Billy Blanks’ Tae Bo unitard
This fit was working double time.
Lilly’s red boots
Anyone else remember this book? To this day, I’ve never seen cooler cowboy boots. Ganni needs to replicate these ASAP.
Gigi Hadid in metallic pink
People turn to Bella for street style, but Gigi wore this in 2017 (pre-Barbie movie) and I’ve never gotten over it. The material is giving American Apparel disco pants, which I still want.
Sarah Michelle Gellar in Daphne purple
I know purple’s divisive but I’m a purple girl. She went all in here.
Keira Knightley’s Bend It Like Beckham halter
Congrats, Keira, on your second appearance on this list! Remember when our society still valued the “going out top”?
Fun fact: Bend It Like Beckham was the first western film shown on TV in North Korea. Perfect choice. Now I have to listen to this song again.
Alexia Wheaton’s entire wardrobe
When her sister literally wished upon a star, “I wish I were Alexia Wheaton,” uhh me too. This remains Katherine Heigl’s most iconic work, and really epitomizes the “you chose books, I chose looks” dichotomy (and all women must choose).
Shania outfit that impresses me much
Another ‘90s classic. I know Brad Pitt is rightfully controversial now, but Shania’s got to be relieved she referenced someone who’s remained hyper-relevant since ‘97. Wouldn’t hit the same if she’d said “Okay, so you're David Duchovny.” No offense.
Baby’s jean shorts
I’ve still not found my perfect jean shorts — they may not exist. But Baby Houseman found hers, paired them with Keds, and had sex with Patrick Swayze.
Leo + Claire in Romeo + Juliet
Wish I could get Leo’s shirt for Drew. So effortless. I already dressed as Claire’s Juliet for Halloween one year in a shitty H&M dress and I want to do it again but better.
Miss Congeniality mini dress
“I am in a dress, I have gel in my hair, I haven't slept all night, I am starved and I am armed. Don't mess with me!”
Julia Roberts’ bridesmaid dress
See, I’m such a purple girl! Is this dress actually pretty or is it just Julia Roberts wearing it? My Best Friend's Wedding has one of the best final scenes ever. Everybody say thank you, Rupert Everett.
Aaliyah’s Try Again crystal choker
Can’t believe she was only 22 when she died. Already so iconic. I suspect I’d hate the feeling of wearing this choker but she made it look so cool.
Save the Last Dance “it’s from the Gap!” outfit
“It’s country and you look country in it.” Is this too niche to be my next Halloween costume?
All of Gwen Stefani’s “Cool” outfits
I deserve a Lake Como summer to live out my dream of being in this video, minus the breakup. I live for all things wistful!!
Timothée Chalamet’s shirtless Oscars look
In general, men dress so boring. They’re scared to take chances, scared to look like they care. That’s why Timmy’s a fun celebrity. I’m haaating his A Complete Unknown press tour looks so let’s go back to a cuter time in 2022. He’s so smug! He knows he did good.
All the dresses from The Hundred Dresses
A poor girl with no friends tells her classmates she owns a hundred dresses. Well spoiler, she didn't, but she drew a hundred dresses. By the time her classmates saw the drawings, her family was bullied into leaving town. This was a book for CHILDREN.
Our Lips Are Sealed retro moment
MK + A were like 14 here and not afraid to reference Mondrian. Generation-defining icons for a reason.
Tyra Banks in Life Size
🎶 Eve's great, no matter where she goes 🎶 dress her up 🎶 from her head down to her toes 🎶.
I can’t cancel Tyra, she’s given me too much.
When Alex McCord thought she ate in a FEED corset
God, I miss old RHONY. I can’t talk too much shit about this look since the proceeds went to meals for children.
Hillary Swank goes backless
This is probably why I chose a backless wedding dress. Remember when Whitney wore it on The Hills and fell down the stairs. Poor Whit.
Carrie Bradshaw little bunny foo foo skirt
So hard to pick only one Carrie outfit. Idk how she sits down in this one but idc. It’s fab. Perfectly captures her willingness to have fun with fashion and not take herself too seriously. Also my favorite Carrie hair-era. Hair-a.
Jessa’s Bushwick feathers
It’s very Miley Can’t Be Tamed. This is the best episode of Girls btw.
Adriana La Cerva's tennis-wear
I’m thinking about the crotch implications of wearing those shorts for physical activity.
Manny’s rebrand on Degrassi
Her thong hanging out was a bit much even for me, but I loved when they finally let Manny be a little slutty! She later had an abortion storyline that of course did not air in the US.
Uptown Girls dress
In another life, I own this dress and wore it to my wedding reception.
The Dress
Is this cheugy to include? It’s blue and black.
Final thoughts
Please someone erase the Benny Blanco queso tub from my memory. Nightmare fuel! What cleaner did they use on the tub ahead of time? How did they get the cheese out? Are his pipes okay? I just know it congealed in minutes.
As a huge fan of the first one, the new Bridget Jones is fine? You don’t have to watch it. It’s a decent background watch with lovely shots of Hampstead Heath.
Harry Lawtey aka Rob won’t be back for Industry season 4 and I’m not happy about that! What happened to locking actors into ironclad 7-season contracts?
This week, the best things I ate were the fried fish sandwich from Baby’s Buns and Buckets in downtown Brooklyn, pasta alla norma from Piccola Cucina Estiatorio in Soho (reasonably priced), nutella banana bread from Butterfield Market on the UES, and margherita pizza from Barboncino in Crown Heights for the last time (so sad it’s closing this month).
This was a fascinating if tortuous read.
I saw the documentary No Other Land last night, about Palestinian villages being destroyed by the Israeli military. It’s nominated for an Academy Award and I hope it wins. I’d say you should watch it but it’s not easy to find right now, given the film doesn’t have a U.S. distributor. The world is so fucking grim and it’s fun to talk about outfits, but this film reminded me looking away is a privilege. It has some moments of humor, believe it or not, and a slight glimmer of hope that world leaders can make a difference. Not that ours will.
The Keira Knightley halter is sooo nostalgic.
I think about Brittany Murphy making that hair clip out of a candle holder at the beginning of Uptown Girls constantly! I'll miss her forever!
Plus this knocked Billy Blanks back into my head like whoooa. Incredible highlights.
